Had my first lab safety training today by this trainer who’s an ex-army personnel. Military trained . T.T a couple of disturbing observations. (1) the security guard who brought us to the seminar room said” sir, more students, booking in..” (2) first thing the trainer said was, “those who want something to drink, come up to the front, take a plastic cup and follow me, I take you to the pantry.” (3) he kept saying, “Clear?!”

it’s mid term wk and im stuck here learning about fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. Some interesting facts – the door with the green EXIT sign and an arrow is not the escape door, we should follow the signs to the one with EXIT without arrow. The escape doors are always the push-type. “Fire-rated” escape doors are wooden and can hold fire back for up to 2 hrs. Non-smoking lobbies are named as such because they have blower systems that are activated when the fire alarm is triggered., and they’ll build up the pressure in the lobby to prevent smoke from entering. The main escape door in that lobby may require abit of effort to open when the blower system behind it is activated. So we are supposed to make use of the build up pressure in the lobby to assist us in pushing open the door. And etc etc

first FYP lab session.. a clumsy one..

towards the end had to observe and note the time taken for my little concoctions to turn to gel, so for a period of 2 hrs i was sitting by the cooler and checking on them at 10 min intervals.

Then my mentor was saying, " Now, for a start, you only do this for 2hrs. but normally, we'll prepare the samples in the morning .. we keep track for 8 hrs. .. Some of us graduate students , we stay overnight and monitor for 12 hrs."

i tink he saw my face went pale...

the silver lining...

Lecturer:

I see. The simplest way, if you don't mind, is to take the quiz during the lunch break on the 29th. (I suppose there must be a lunch break =) ) could you check how long is the lunch break? The quiz is only half an hour long. We could think about ways to minimize your traveling time, but please give it a try to find out about the lunch break.

If all fails, we could try to arrange a make-up quiz, but we cannot confirm the detail arrangement at this moment.

Lecturer:

I tried to ask around for you too; it seems that the IMRE safety training does not have a fixed lunch break, at least in the past. We will look into the possibility of having the quiz on the same day or next day.

Ming Hao, could you also help to keep an record too?

One lost battle ...

Ms X:
We have noted your FYP Attachment with [...] from 21 August 2009 to 01
May 2010.

We have registered on your behalf to attend the compulsory safety
training called Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS). Please note that
you have to attend the course before you are allowed to enter the
laboratories.
The details of the course as follows:

Date: 28th to 29th Sept 09
Time: 0900 - 1330 / 0900 - 1630
Trainer: Mr Y
ZC:
I happen to have a mid term quiz scheduled on the 29th Sept. It is a
half hour paper some time between 12pm to 2pm. I think it is abit tough
for me to arrange for a make-up quiz. Is there another time slot that i
can join for the EHS safety training or is it possible for me to excuse
myself for a while halfway through the training ?

Ms X:
Dear Mr Y,
One of our student's email refers below. He's wondering if he could be
excused to sit for a mid-term quiz on the 29 Sept which happens to be
fall on the EHS Training day.

Mr Y:
If student is unable to attend the full course of the EHS Training, I
would advice to re-register them for the next available training as they
will have to sit for EHS test the following week and if they have miss
part of the training session normally they will fail the test.

...This will waste of seats for the training...

Please do re-register the student for the training that they are able to
complete the FULL training of 2 days. Thank you
.

ZC:
Are there any other training slots which you can slot me in?

Ms X:
The next available training would be on the 22 and 23 Oct 09

Mentor:

Mr Ong Zhi Cheng will be in [...] for his FYP. It would be good if he can go through and pass the EHS this month.

As his quiz is around lunch time and lasts about half an hour, do you think it’s still ok to let him be in this round of EHS training? I trust that he can catch up what he’ll miss (at most 1 hour) from other participants.

Thanks for your kind consideration.

Mr Y:

Please understand that [...] do have EHS policy endorsed and please note that there isWorkplace Safety & Health Act by MOM now that we must compliance.

In the policy is written that all new staff/student need to attend and complete the 2 days of EHS training before they are allow to enter the lab to start work, and we do have a long list of students waiting to attend this training. If the student is unable to attend the FULL 2 days training, it will be fair to give the seat to the next available student in the waiting list.

Please take note that we all have our own job scope and the student should decided which is more important to them. They are have for the FYP which is part of their study programme, moreover we allow the student to re-register for the next training on his availabilities and not that we do not allow him to re-register.

Hope you can understand my stand and I’m just doing my job. Thank you

Mentor:

Noted with thanks.

Mentor > ZC:

Can you make it to the 22nd and 23rd Oct training?

... got lab on 22nd. DaCapo on 23rd...
